Thing 5: IM would be useful when communicating with other libraries/business office--best used when you didn't want to use the phone and were at a computer. If I was IM with friends outside of work time, I would prefer to have personal communication and would probably use the telephone. The city office uses IM to let us know when we have packages at the office or they would like time cards turned in. Making sure that the individual you wanted to communicate with was online or available is the key.

I have never really used IM much, just occasionally to talk with relatives. However, a few months ago, I started to use Second Life and began using IMs like crazy! It was strange at how quickly I went from checking one or two times a week to see if relatives are on to every night to see what friends from around the world are doing.
